# Create an event > Start with Kai (type one sentence) or the classic form, and what you can and can't set at creation time. Source: https://luau.co/help/create-an-event · Updated 2026-09-22 · Index: https://luau.co/help/llms.txt There are two ways to create an event: describe it to **Kai**, Luau's planning assistant, or fill in the classic form. Both end on the same event page, where you keep editing, invite guests, and add a sign-up board. ## Start from your dashboard **On the web (app.luau.co in any browser — this is also the Android experience):** 1. Sign in at [app.luau.co](https://app.luau.co) and open your **Dashboard**. 2. Choose **Create Event** (on a new account the button reads **Create Your First Event**; the event grid also has a **+ New Event** tile). 3. That opens **Kai** for most accounts, otherwise the classic **Event Creator** form. You can switch either way: Kai has a **Use Classic Form** link in its top-right corner, and the form has a **Use Kai** link in its top bar. **In Luau for iPhone:** 1. Open the app and tap the **Create Event** pill at the top of your Dashboard. 2. The first time, Luau asks whether you'd like to use Kai (the AI assistant). Say yes to plan with Kai, or choose to skip and get the **New Event** form instead. You're asked again on later taps until you opt in. 3. Inside Kai there's a **Classic Form** button in the toolbar if you'd rather fill in fields. ## Create with Kai 1. Kai opens with **"Hi, I'm Kai. What are you planning?"** Type a sentence into the box (placeholder **Tell me about your event…**). Include a date, time, and location if you know them, or just describe the vibe and Kai fills in the blanks. Chips like **Birthday party**, **Dinner with friends**, **Book club series**, and **Game night** are there as starting points. 2. Kai answers with an **Event preview** card (or **Event series preview** for a recurring event). Everything on the card is editable before you commit: title, description, **Date**, **Time**, **Timezone**, **Vibe**, the location (tap **Edit** in the location section), and the cover image. 3. Tap **Looks good, create it**. Kai shows **Event created** with a **View your event** link that takes you to the event page. Good to know: - **Kai can set up sign-ups at the same time.** If you mention volunteers, roles, shifts, or "who brings what", Kai adds a **Sign-ups** section to the preview and the board is published with the event. You'll refine it far more easily on the event page afterwards (see [Make it a Group Effort](https://luau.co/help/group-effort-setup)), so don't try to perfect it in the chat. - Kai doesn't have fields for capacity, plus-ones, or hiding the guest list. Those are set after creation from the event's **•••** menu (see [Edit your event](https://luau.co/help/edit-your-event)). - Not signed in yet? Kai still drafts the event and then shows **Create an account to finish**. Sign up and the draft is created for you, nothing to retype. - Kai can also update an existing event later ("move Saturday's dinner to 7pm"). A date, time, or location change made through Kai notifies guests who RSVP'd Going or Maybe, the same as Save and notify. ## Create with the classic form **On the web (app.luau.co in any browser — this is also the Android experience):** The **Event Creator** page (`app.luau.co/dashboard/create-event`) has these fields. Required ones are marked with a red asterisk. - Cover image (upload, pick, or generate one) - **Event Title** - **Event Description** (supports formatting) - **Event Date**, with links to **+ Make this a multi-day event** (adds an **End Date**; sign-up boards support events up to 14 days long) or **+ Make this an event series** (adds **Cadence**, **Day of Week**, **Which Week**, **Every N Days**, and **Pick end date**) - **Start Time** and **End Time**, plus a **Time zone** line with a **Change** link - **Event Type** - **Event Location** (address search) - **Emoji Theme** - **Child Friendly**, **Pet Friendly**, **Alcohol Friendly** Tap **Create Event** (or **Create Event Series**) at the bottom. A **Clear** button in the top bar resets the form. **In Luau for iPhone:** The **New Event** form (titled **New Series** if you turn on the series toggle) is grouped into sections: - Image picker - **Event Details**: **Event Name**, **Type**, **Date**, a **Multi-day event** toggle (adds **Last day**) - **Time**: **Starts** and **Ends** - **Location** - **Description** - **Friendliness**: **Pet Friendly**, **Kid Friendly**, **Alcohol**, each **Don't Show** / **Yes** / **No** - **Make this a series** toggle Tap **Create** in the toolbar. If something required is missing, an **Almost there** alert lists what's left. **Generate AI Image** needs a title and description first. ## What you can't set at creation Neither Kai nor the forms ask about **Max Guests**, the waitlist, **Hide Guest List**, or **Allow Plus-Ones**. Create the event first, then open the **•••** menu on the event page and use **Guest List & Capacity**. It answers with an editable Event preview card; tap Looks good, create it and the event page is ready to share. **Q: Do I need the iPhone app to create an event?** No. The web app at app.luau.co has everything, in any browser. On Android the web app is the way to use Luau. **Q: Can Kai set up volunteer sign-ups when it creates the event?** Yes. Mention roles, shifts, or who should bring what and Kai adds a Sign-ups section to the preview; the board is published with the event. Refine it afterwards on the event page with Manage sign-ups. **Q: Can I create a recurring event or a series?** Yes. Ask Kai for a series ("book club, last Sunday of the month") or use + Make this an event series on the classic form (Make this a series on iPhone). **Q: Where do I set a guest limit, a waitlist, or hide the guest list?** After creating the event: open the ••• menu on the event page and use Guest List & Capacity. Those settings aren't on the creation form or in Kai. **Q: Can I start planning before I have an account?** Kai drafts the event before you sign in. When you're happy with the preview it asks you to create an account, then creates the event for you without retyping anything. **Q: What kinds of events can I create?** Anything with a guest list: dinners, birthday parties, playdates, book clubs, run clubs, church and school fundraisers, recurring meetups. Add a Group Effort board when you need volunteers or supplies.
