# Connect your calendar

Connecting your calendar does two things. The obvious one: everything you say yes to lands on your calendar with reminders. The interesting one: with your permission, Kai can notice when you and your people are all free and suggest getting together.

## Connect it

**On the web (app.luau.co in any browser — this is also the Android experience):**

1. Go to **Dashboard → Profile** and find **📅 Sync Your Calendar**.
2. Tap **Connect Google Calendar** and approve access in Google.
3. You'll see **✅ Calendar Connected**. The same card has **Disconnect Google Calendar**.

**In Luau for iPhone:**

Open **Profile** and tap **Connect Google Calendar** (*Sync your events to Google Calendar*). The Google sign-in opens inside the app and drops you back on your profile; there's no browser switch and no Luau re-login. **Disconnect** appears in the same place once connected.

## What gets added to your calendar

- Every event you RSVP **Going** or **Maybe** to (not waitlisted), including events you host (you're RSVP'd Going to your own), as **🌺 [event name]** on your primary Google calendar, with the location, the host, a link back to the event, an email reminder 24 hours before, and a pop-up 90 minutes before.
- When you first connect, the upcoming events you'd **already** RSVP'd to are added too.
- If the host changes the date, time, or place, your entry updates. If they delete or cancel it, it's renamed **🚫 [CANCELLED] …** and stops blocking the time.
- Recurring series you join are synced as a set.

## What Luau reads (and doesn't)

Luau asks Google for calendar access so it can write your events. It **reads** your calendar only if you turn on **📅 Match on calendar availability** (off by default), and then it only asks Google one question per time window: busy or free? Titles, attendees, locations, and notes are never fetched, and no person ever sees your calendar through Luau.

## How Kai uses free time

With availability matching on:

1. Each night Luau checks whether you're free in coarse weekend windows (Saturday and Sunday mornings and afternoons, two weekends out) and keeps just those yes/no answers for a few days.
2. Kai compares those windows with your mutuals who share a **Social Spark** with you (pickleball, hikes, watch parties, and so on, from [training Kai](https://luau.co/help/train-kai)).
3. When at least **three** of them are free in the same window, you get a nudge: **5 of your people are free Saturday morning ✨** *They all like pickleball. Want me to put out feelers?* Outdoor sparks are weather-checked first.
4. Tap **Put out feelers** and Kai opens a planning conversation with a draft you can send. You'll never get more than a couple of these a week, and turning the toggle off stops them.

When you're the one planning, Kai's invitee suggestions also say how many people look free (*3 of your people look free that Saturday*). Counts only, never names of who's busy.

## Turn availability matching on

**On the web (app.luau.co in any browser — this is also the Android experience):**

**Dashboard → Settings**, under your social profile's planning preferences: **📅 Match on calendar availability** (*Let Kai use your Google Calendar free/busy — only ever as a simple free-or-busy signal, shown in aggregate — to spot days when you and your people are all open.*)

**In Luau for iPhone:**

**Profile → Social Life → Buffers**, the same **Match on calendar availability** switch.

## Without a Google account

- Every RSVP confirmation email includes **Add to Calendar**, a standard calendar file for Apple Calendar, Outlook, or anything else.
- On iPhone, the sign-up board's **Add to Calendar** writes your claimed shifts straight into your phone's calendar. Luau asks for write-only access; it can't read anything.

## Disconnecting

**Disconnect Google Calendar** (web) or **Disconnect** (iPhone) removes Luau's access immediately. Events already on your calendar stay; future RSVPs stop syncing; any stored availability windows expire on their own.

## Frequently asked

**Q: What happens when I connect Google Calendar?**

Every event you RSVP Going or Maybe to is added to your primary Google calendar with reminders, including the ones you'd already said yes to. Changes, cancellations, and deletions follow.

**Q: Can Luau see what's on my calendar?**

Only whether you're busy or free in a time window, and only if you turn on Match on calendar availability. Luau never reads event titles, locations, or attendees, and never shows anyone your calendar.

**Q: Can my friends see when I'm free?**

Not your calendar and not your schedule. Kai only ever uses free time in aggregate, for example telling a host that 3 of their people look free Saturday morning. Nobody sees which three, or why.

**Q: How does Kai suggest hanging out?**

When at least three of your mutuals who share one of your Social Sparks are all free in the same weekend window, Kai sends a nudge like 5 of your people are free Saturday morning. They all like pickleball. Want me to put out feelers?

**Q: Do I have to connect a calendar to use Luau?**

No. It's optional. Without it you still get RSVP confirmations with an Add to Calendar file, and Kai still helps you plan; it just can't spot open weekends.

**Q: Does Luau work with Apple Calendar or Outlook?**

Syncing is Google Calendar only today. Every RSVP confirmation includes an Add to Calendar file that opens in Apple Calendar, Outlook, or anything else, and on iPhone the sign-up board can write your claimed shifts to your calendar.

**Q: What happens if I disconnect?**

Luau forgets its access to your Google account immediately. Events already on your calendar stay there; nothing new is added, and any availability windows Luau had stored expire on their own within a few days.
